| Choosing the right name for your pub is extremely important. The name tells a lot about your pub. The name McCarthy's, for example, is a classic name that can be used on any Victorian, Cottage or Pub Shop pub. It is a strong and simple name that will stand the test of time. McCarthy's on its own however, conveys no more than its Irish roots. You may wish to use a name that more directly describes the nature of your pub. For example, if you are opening a Gaelic-style pub, we recommend that you choose a Gaelic-sounding name. Sláinte (a common Gaelic toast meaning 'to your health') is an example of a name that works well on a Gaelic-style pub. Gaelic-sounding names can also be used on other styles of pub. The Gaelic name can be translated on the menu, which many customers will find interesting. |

| A Brewery-style pub ideally should be named in a way that conjures up the brewing/beer imagery. If you plan on combining several styles under one roof, a simple Irish name will work best. |

| There are pros and cons of self-deprecating names like Durty McCarthy's. On the positive side, they signal a fun and relaxed atmosphere that will appeal to a younger drinker. Names like these, however, will not add authenticity, as there are not many old pubs in Ireland with these kinds of names. Likewise, names like these tend to be commonly used in chain restaurants and pubs. |

| Another route is to use famous Irish cities or authors in naming your pub. The Dubliner, Limerick's and The Killarney are examples of pub names that stem from Irish place names. Likewise, Samuel Beckett's and James Joyce's are examples of pubs named after famous Irish authors. This strategy works particularly well in markets with a limited Irish connection, as these names are easier to identify as Irish than McCarthy's, which some people might think is Scottish. |

| To create the illusion of history, '& Sons' can be added to the name (eg. McCarthy & Sons). Many pubs in Ireland attach initials before the pub name, eg. P.J. McCarthy's. |

| Unless you have a Shop-style pub, we suggest that you do not sue your pub's name in signage on the inside of the pub. Pushing your pub name too hard can backfire, because it will create an overly commercial environment that is inconsistent with the 'down-toe-earth' nature of the concept. This does not apply to shop-style pubs, as using the name on the inside supports the general store atmosphere. |
